The American Revolution was one of the most important events in history. It is one of the first times in history that citizens stood up against their king to protect their individual right. The American Revolution did not occur over night. It began because the King and government of England wanted the American colonies to pay extra taxes to pay for the Seven Years War (1756-1763). In the 1760's, the British created a new laws that made colonists pay taxes for sugar, tea, etc. The colonies, all thirteen of them, felt like they were being punished. They were expected to pay more money, but had no say as they were not permitted to have elected people look out for them in England. In the beginning, the colonies just wanted to be treated as equal as the rest of English citizens. However, King George of England would not listen to their complaints. Eventually, the anger grew and the colonies saw no choice but to separate from England and fight for their independence. The American revolution opened the eyes to others around the world and gave birth to many other revolutions.
